Weekend Box Office (11.03.14) — Ouija Eeks Out a Win

Two things I did get right in last week’s predictions: Halloween weekend was poor all-around, and it was a real nail-biter. Current estimates have Ouija winning over Nightcrawler by about $250,000, but earlier estimates had Nightcrawler winning by an ultraslim $9,000. Meanwhile, the bottom three — and John Wick, which came in sixth — are all within a million of each other. If ever there were a week where top five might change between the estimates and the actuals, this is it.
If this weekend’s gross was pretty low (a scant $47.71 million), next weekend’s looks to be enormous. Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar debuts on Friday (Wednesday for IMAX and 3D), and the animated superhero movie Big Hero 6 seems positioned for a strong showing as well.
