WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (07.14.14) – Apes Rule the Weekend…

The apes rule the roost, as we knew they would. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” hits the ground running with an impressive but not surprising $73 million in its opening weekend, knocking “Transformers” down a peg to the #2 spot. Next, we have “Tammy,” who seems to be holding her own against the big boys in the top spots, doing a respectable $12.9 million. And, once again, the sequels are keeping their heads above water with “22 Jump Street” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2” rounding out the top five in their fifth weeks at the box office.

Next weekend, there’s something for everyone. From the Pixar animated family film “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” to horror flick “The Purge: Anarchy,” to comedy “Sex Tape,” which I expect has some horrifying moments of its own to contend with. I’m going to go with raunch and predict that Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel will get the top spot while “Planes” and “The Purge” can duke it out for second.

#1 DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Weekend = $73 Million Total = $73 Million
#2 TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Weekend = $16.5 Million Total = $209 Million
#3 TAMMY Weekend = $12.9 Million Total = $57.4 Million
#4 22 JUMP STREET Weekend = $6.7 Million Total = $171.9 Million
#5 HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 Weekend = $5.86 Million Total = $152 Million
