The 54th New York Film Festival is set to open with the hot button topic of mass incarceration via Ava Duvernay’s documentary The 13th. The fest will serve as a stage for the world premiere of the film, which will later debut on Netflix and in limited theaters on Oct. 7.

Lupita Nyong’o is negotiations to star in sci-fi thriller Intelligent Life. Behind the camera, acclaimed director Ava DuVernay is circling the project with an offer likely to go out this week. The project hails from Amblin Entertainment and Big Beach Films.

The film that she would direct is currently unknown, but the Black Panther and Captain Marvel films have been reported as the top possibilities.
